March 2011
On 4 March 2011, first steps were taken to create a Play Pledge in the London Borough of Hillingdon. The pledge was the outcome of a strategic Play Shaper seminar kindly hosted by Alison Booth, Childcare and Early Years Service Manager at Hillingdon Council, Civic Centre, Uxbridge and jointly organised with Hillingdon Play Association (HPA). Participants at the seminar ‘Play Matters: it’s everyone’s business, Transforming children’s play in Hillingdon’ – included Councillor David Routledge, Hillingdon’s Play Champion, John McDonnell MP, Chair of HPA, senior executives from a number of different Council departments, and other key partners such as Hillingdon Association of Voluntary Services and Safer Neighbourhood teams – developed and agreed an initial version of the pledge. The seminar explored how providing for children’s play, in its cross cutting nature, can contribute in practical ways to a whole range of services, and discussed how to make best use of the current resources across the borough. The play pledge then went forward to a major community consultation on 24 March 2011 at HPA, Hayes End Community Centre. Parents, carers and grandparents, members of community and neighbourhood groups, Hillingdon voluntary organisations working with children and families, play providers; people working on housing estates, in parks, in sport, and volunteers, discussed how we can all work together to make Hillingdon neighbourhoods more play-friendly in these challenging times. The participants worked on the initial play pledge and came up with the following:
Hillingdon Play Pledge
PLAY
- Great for children
- Great for the community
- Essential for Hillingdon
We aim for Hillingdon to be a fully inclusive borough where all children can play in freedom, have fun, develop and enjoy themselves in safe yet adventurous spaces.
We will strive to ensure everyone understands the wider benefits of play and that play is essential for healthy, happy children, families and the well-being of all.
It is everyone’s responsibility to work together to make this happen.
